Small Pear Tree in Blossom — Vincent van Gogh

A tall Impressionist canvas print in gold and green. Its fresh, light-filled spring palette suits a bedroom, wellness space or quiet reception area, bringing a note of renewal and calm to a tall wall.

Visual Presence

A slender young pear tree stands almost bare of leaf, its dark violet-grey branches scattered with clusters of creamy-white blossom. Behind it lie a sunlit golden orchard, a low picket fence and a band of deep green foliage, set against a soft chalk-blue sky. The palette is fresh and springlike — pale yellow ground, white flowers and cool blue held in bright, airy light.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this modest fruit tree in the spring of 1888, soon after arriving in Arles in the south of France, where a wave of orchards coming into bloom prompted a rapid series of blossom pictures. He worked outdoors and at speed to catch the fleeting flowering, thinning his paint and letting the weave of the canvas show through. The single spindly pear tree, placed slightly off-centre against a walled garden, reflects his fascination with Japanese prints and their spare, decorative arrangement of branch and blossom. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
