Horse on the beach (Summer Night) — Nils Kreuger

A large Symbolist canvas print in black and orange. The black horse crossing the middle holds the wall, while the salmon band of sky and its orange reflection in the tidal pool below throw warm light back into the room, so an entrance hall, a hotel reception or a bedroom wall ends a long sightline on a lit horizon instead of a blank surface.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres wide, the salmon sky band and the orange strip burning in the pool are the only bright areas, so an entryway lit low in the evening picks up a warm horizon line rather than a bright rectangle. The horse reads as one unbroken black silhouette from the front door, which lets the piece carry a hallway or a stairwell sightline without ever being looked at closely. Standing beside it, the turquoise sea, the low grey rocks strung across it and the fine hatched strokes over the water come forward, so the same wall gives something back on the way past.

About the Art

Nils Kreuger (1858–1930), painted 1902. Nils Kreuger (1858-1930), Varberg School, painted 1902. We chose it for the horse. Kreuger spent his summers on Öland from 1896 and made its flat shores and grazing animals his subject; here he reduces one animal to a black shape against a shore still light at night. He started the Varberg School with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström in 1887, a move away from realist landscape toward Gauguin and Van Gogh. The short hatched strokes and dots across the water are the technique he took up after 1900. Oil on canvas, 99 by 128.5 centimetres, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Stockholm.
