The Forces of a Street — Umberto Boccioni

A giant Futurist canvas print in purple and black. Four pale shafts of tram headlight cut from the top edge to the floor of the picture, so an entryway, a stairwell landing or a hotel reception gains a vertical run of cold light where a tall wall was dead dark space.

Visual Presence

Printed two to three metres tall, this one takes light rather than gives it — the plum and near-black ground swallows the room's glow and only the pale blue shafts come back, so an entryway reads deeper and cooler with it up. From across the space just those beams register, raking down the full height of the wall, which is why it holds a tall narrow run on its own and wants a lamp near it rather than daylight across it. At arm's length the ridged strokes, the small olive and yellow panels and the thin black wire lines break into detail nobody sees from the doorway.

About the Art

Umberto Boccioni (1882–1916), Modern, painted 1911. Umberto Boccioni (1882–1916), Futurism, painted 1911. We chose it as the Futurist night picture — the one where the movement's subject stops being a body and becomes electric light. A tram pushes through pedestrians and carriages in a city street after dark, and its headlamps throw the wedges that cut the canvas apart; Boccioni breaks the planes until the figures survive only as shorthand, caught in motions that contradict each other. The painting marks the turn in his work, a year before The Street Enters the House. Oil on canvas, 99.5 by 80.5 centimetres, Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka.
