Blind Mother, or The Mother — Egon Schiele

A large Expressionist canvas print in brown and white. The chalk-white bodies burning out of a near-black brown ground work like a lit lamp on the wall, so a dark study, a library or a panelled boardroom gains one bright point instead of another heavy surface.

Visual Presence

At two metres the brown ground sinks back into a dim wall while the chalk-white figures stay lit, so from across the room you read one pale shape holding still rather than a big dark rectangle. The thin red lines along the bedding are the only warm marks in the piece, and under lamplight they catch and keep the wall from going flat. It quiets a space down and asks people to look for a while, which suits a room where they sit rather than a room they walk through.

About the Art

Egon Schiele (1890–1918), Expressionism, painted 1914. Egon Schiele (1890-1918), Expressionist, painted 1914. We chose it because it is Schiele at wall scale and with no charm in it: a blind mother folded over two children, her pale body built as a block against earthy brown facets. The pose comes from Rodin's Crouching Woman, the figure he made as a caryatid for the Gates of Hell, and Schiele squares it off to fit a horizontal canvas. The cradle behind her is drawn like a coffin. The Munich Secession jury took it for their summer exhibition that same year. It hangs in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, inventory 483, oil on canvas, 99 by 120 centimetres.
