Stein on the Danube II — Egon Schiele

A big Expressionist Abstract canvas print in brown and olive. Its grounded, earthen palette and quiet density suit a private library, boardroom or study, lending the room considered weight without competing for attention.

Visual Presence

A medieval riverside town rises in a dense mosaic of ochre and umber rooftops, crowned by a tall pale church tower with a dark cupola and a smaller red-domed spire. White-walled houses press together between deep olive-green fields and a broad band of still, tonal water. The palette is earthy and muted — browns, olives and bone-white held in a hushed, almost airless calm.

About the Art

Egon Schiele painted this view of Stein an der Donau as one of a series devoted to the medieval Austrian town, working from the Kreuzberg hill that rises behind it. Rather than a faithful record, he rearranged the town's characteristic buildings into a tightly packed portrait of architecture — the blocky Minorite monastery, for instance, is set beside the Frauenberg church although it actually stands some 300 metres to the east. The silhouette is pressed against a flat, monochrome river to sharpen its contours. The painting is held in the Leopold Museum, Vienna.
