J.M.W. Turner's A Mountain Scene, Val d'Aosta — an Alpine valley dissolved into pure light and weather, late Romantic Turner on a large landscape canvas.

Visual Presence

A dramatic alpine valley dissolves into mist and golden light, mountain peaks suggested rather than drawn, with watercolour-like washes of ochre, blue-grey and rose merging across the sky and into the rocky foreground. Atmosphere is the subject; specific geography is barely present.

About the Art

J.M.W. Turner painted his Val d'Aosta studies between 1836 and 1837 on returning from his Alpine sketching tour of northern Italy, working in the high Romantic mode he had developed across four decades. The canvas treats geography almost as a side effect of weather — the valley is buried in luminous mist and the rocks dissolve into the same atmospheric haze that holds the sky. Turner's late style, of which this is a strong example, made him one of the very first European painters to treat pure light and atmosphere as the proper subject of landscape, two generations before the Impressionists would do the same.
