Pieter Gerardus van Os's A Lion from the Menagerie of King Louis Napoleon — painted from life at the royal menagerie in Holland, on gallery canvas.

Visual Presence

A standing lion fills the canvas in 3/4 view, its tawny mane catching golden light against deep umber shadow. The animal looks directly outward, alert but composed, paws planted firmly on bare ground. Earthy ambers, rich browns, and burnt sienna dominate, with the dark background pulling the figure forward into sharp relief.

About the Art

Pieter Gerardus van Os painted this lion from life at the Royal Menagerie of King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, then ruler of the Kingdom of Holland. Van Os, son of celebrated animal painter Jan van Os, made repeated visits to the exotic menagerie at the Soestdijk palace to study its creatures up close. The lion was among the most prized exhibits — a living symbol of imperial power transplanted into Dutch courtly life. The work belongs to a wider Romantic-era fascination with naturalist observation of menagerie animals before zoological gardens became public institutions. Held by the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
