Visual Presence

From across the room it reads as pure texture — a warm, tawny field shot through with silver, closer to woven cloth than a picture. Its russet and wheat tones sit naturally with timber, leather and earth-toned interiors, adding movement without adding colour noise. At full size it turns a dining room, study or reception wall into one shimmering surface.

About the Art

John Singer Sargent is remembered as the great society portraitist — we chose this canvas because it shows him off duty, painting a tangle of windblown thistles outdoors in rural England, or possibly Nice, to experiment with broken brushwork and a vibrant palette. The result is remarkably abstract, the dynamic patterning of the plants asserting the flatness of the picture plane rather than any sense of depth. Sargent took up painting en plein air through his growing friendship with Claude Monet and kept the habit for life as a respite from portrait commissions. It came to the Art Institute of Chicago as a gift of Brooks McCormick.
