Visual Presence

On a wall it works like a single spotlight: one pale figure lifted from a wide field of soft khaki and powder blue, legible from the far end of the room. The dusty pastel tones warm a space without hardening it, adding quiet theatre rather than colour noise. A tall format for a narrow wall — entry, bedroom or dressing area — where it can hold the eye alone.

About the Art

Edgar Degas returned to the dancers of the Paris Opéra more often than to any other subject, and we chose this pastel because it distils that lifelong obsession into a single star. The Art Institute of Chicago identifies her as Rosita Mauri, a Spanish dancer who moved from Catalonia to Paris and rose to fame on the Opéra's stage. Worked in pastel on cream wove paper, the sheet sets her against a sweeping, near-empty floor, the corps dissolving into strokes of pale colour behind her — the cropped, off-centre staging that made Degas's ballet scenes so modern, and still reads as daring on a wall today.
