Visual Presence

A dark-haired nude woman stands among towering foliage, turned in profile as she reaches toward a leaf, a pale full moon glowing in a soft grey-blue sky above her. The jungle rises in warm olive and golden-brown fronds, palms and grasses, dotted with pink and yellow blossoms. The palette is warm and earthen — olive and gold massed through the growth, cooled by the pale sky and moon.

About the Art

Henri Rousseau set this solitary nude within one of his imagined jungles, the lush and towering vegetation drawn not from travel but from the greenhouses of the Paris botanical gardens, illustrated books and the city's natural history collections. The figure stands for Eve in the garden, reaching among the leaves beneath a pale rising moon, the biblical subject transposed into Rousseau's own dreamlike wilderness of exaggerated fronds and stylised blooms. Rendered in his flat, deliberate hand, the scene holds a quiet, suspended stillness. The painting is held in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg.
