Claude Monet's Path through the Irises — a near-abstract plunge into his Giverny iris beds, a tall floral canvas.

Visual Presence

A narrow garden path curves upward through dense beds of irises rendered in violet, indigo and pale lavender, their pointed green leaves rising vertically like calligraphic strokes. The brushwork is loose and rhythmic, with no horizon visible — the eye is drawn entirely into the curve of the path and the upward pull of the flowers.

About the Art

Claude Monet painted Path through the Irises between 1914 and 1917 in his garden at Giverny, where the iris beds along the central allée were one of his most-studied motifs in his final decade. By this period his cataracts were advanced and he had moved decisively toward an immersive, near-abstract treatment of his garden — pulling the viewer into the foliage at close range and removing conventional landscape framing. The vertical format compresses the path and flowers into a single tapestry, prefiguring the all-over surfaces of mid-20th-century abstract painting.
