Claude Monet's The Manneporte near Étretat — the great Normandy sea-arch rising from turquoise surf, a vertical coastal canvas full of light.

Visual Presence

A vertical view of the great natural sea-arch at Étretat, the cream-coloured Manneporte cliff rising out of churning turquoise water against a luminous pale sky. The chalk surface is built in nervous broken strokes; the sea below is built in flecks of teal, white foam and deep blue.

About the Art

Claude Monet painted the Manneporte arch repeatedly during his Étretat campaigns of 1883 and 1885, always from below at low tide so that the full scale of the chalk cliff would dominate the canvas. The motif had been popularised by Courbet a generation earlier, but Monet treated it as a study in changing light and weather rather than topography — producing the same cliff under storm, mist, late sun and clear midday, in close echo of the serial method he would soon perfect on haystacks and cathedrals.
