Death — Hans Baluschek

A large Symbolist canvas print in grey and red. The pale lilac-grey mist runs the full width and the scarlet poppies burn along the left edge under a low white sun, so a living room, a hotel lobby or a boardroom gains one wide stretch of soft morning haze with a single hot corner of colour where a blank wall used to be.

Visual Presence

Printed two to three metres wide, the lilac-grey mist covers roughly four-fifths of the surface, so the print lifts the light in a room the way a pale window wall does instead of dropping a dark block into it. From the far side of a living room three things carry: the low white sun on the right, the red poppies massed on the left, and the small pale figure standing between them, which is what lets one print hold a wide sofa wall without a row of smaller frames beside it. Walk up and the wall starts giving back its small things: the blue threads hanging from the rim of the poppy cap, the grey snake coiled at the figure's feet, the skull half-sunk in the grass on the right.

About the Art

Hans Baluschek (1870–1935), Expressionism, painted 1895. Hans Baluschek (1870-1935), Symbolism, painted 1895. We chose it because it is the Baluschek almost nobody knows. He built his name on the grey edges of Berlin, on railway yards, rolling mills and workers walking home, joined the Berlin Secession in 1898 as its secretary, and was struck off every exhibition list in 1933 as a Marxist painter of degenerate art. This early sheet shows the other half of him, the half the Bröhan Museum set out to recover in 2024 when it re-read his work as a fantasist's as much as a realist's: death as a boy crowned with a poppy.
