Brahmacharis — Amrita Sher-Gil

A large Modernist canvas print in red and white. Five figures sit shoulder to shoulder in stark white dhotis against a wall of deep red, and printed near three metres wide they come out close to life-size, so a living room, a hotel reception or a boardroom gets a row of people sitting quietly at eye level instead of a bare stretch of wall.

Visual Presence

The deep red ground fills the top two-thirds of the print and throws warm colour back across the room, so a pale living-room wall reads as though a lamp were burning behind the canvas. From the far side of the space only two things carry — the band of white dhotis along the bottom and the single golden-skinned figure at the centre — the red closes behind them, which is why the print holds a long wall on its own with nothing hung beside it. At three metres the figures stand near life-size and two of them look straight out, so anyone crossing the room is met at eye level rather than walking past a pattern.

About the Art

Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), Modern, painted 1937. Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), Indian modernism, painted 1937. We chose it as the strongest wide picture of her South Indian trilogy, and the one where her white does the most work: five figures in stark white dhotis laid flat across a deep red ground. She painted it at Shimla after travelling south to the Ajanta caves, and the debt shows in the clear outlines and the simplified bodies. Scholars rate it among her finest. It hung at her Lahore exhibition that year priced at fifteen hundred rupees. Oil on canvas, 144.5 by 86.5 centimetres, held by the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.
