Sunrise — Ferdinand du Puigaudeau

A big Impressionist canvas print in pink and red. Its enveloping rose light and quiet horizon suit a bedroom, a wellness retreat or a boutique-hotel suite, wrapping the room in a warm, contemplative glow.

Visual Presence

A pale disc of sun hangs low in a vast rose-pink sky, its warm glow flooding a flat marsh landscape where slender trees rise in dark, feathery silhouettes at either side. Below, a still ribbon of water carries a single dark-sailed boat past a distant village spire, and a soft pink path threads through the deep green and russet grasses of the foreground. The whole scene is bathed in saturated pink and coral, with the trees and reeds reading almost black against the light.

About the Art

Ferdinand du Puigaudeau made the transient effects of light his true subject, painting sunrises, sunsets and moonlit hours over the coast and marshland of the Guérande peninsula, where he lived near Le Croisic at the manor of Kervaudu at the mouth of the Loire. Loosely connected to the Pont-Aven painters around Gauguin, whom he had known since the 1880s, he built his skies from small, vibrating touches of colour, letting pinks and oranges dissolve trees, water and distant villages into a single luminous atmosphere. This marsh view, with its low sun, silhouetted trees and lone sail, gathers the motifs he returned to throughout his coastal Breton work.
