Rythme n°1, décoration pour le Salon des Tuileries — Robert Delaunay

A giant Colourful Abstract canvas print in red and blue. Red and white discs turn through the centre while the deep ultramarine block on the right holds the weight down, so a hallway, a hotel lobby or a boardroom wall reads as one spinning colour wheel from either end of the room.

Visual Presence

Hung three metres wide down a hallway, the red halves of the big discs throw warm colour across the passage, so a corridor with no window of its own stops reading as dark. The deep blue and the grey target rings on the right hold that heat in check, which keeps a long wall lively without tipping it into noise. Walk the length of it and the fan of thin spectrum stripes at the centre seems to swing; the single yellow dot and the smallest grey rings only come apart from the pattern up close.

About the Art

Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), Modern, painted 1938. Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), Orphism, painted 1938. We chose it because it was built as architecture rather than as a picture: 592 centimetres wide and 529 high, made for the sculpture hall of the Salon des Tuileries, where Albert Gleizes, Jacques Villon, André Lhote and Sonia Delaunay each took a wall as well. This is the first of three Rythmes he painted for that room. Discs, half-discs and one narrow fan of spectrum stripes carry the whole composition, and nothing in it stands for anything else. It went to the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris by donation in 1939, inventory AMVP 2574.
