Czardas Dancers — Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

An oversized Expressionist canvas print in red and orange. Four dancers in scarlet skirts kicking across an orange stage put real movement on the wall, so a hallway people only walk through, a restaurant dining room or a hotel bar gains a reason to slow down.

Visual Presence

At two to three metres wide the red skirts and the orange stage floor read as one mass of heat, so a cool white or grey wall warms through without a lamp aimed at it. The row of kicking legs and white stockings runs left to right across the lower half, which pulls the eye along the wall and makes a narrow hallway feel like it is going somewhere. The dark green panels behind the dancers weigh the top of the canvas down, so from across the room the piece reads warm and busy rather than shrill.

About the Art

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), Expressionist. We chose it because it is the high point of the subject Kirchner chased hardest — dancers. A founder of Die Brücke in Dresden, he took his figures from the city's variety theatres and held that dancing put people back in touch with their basic urges. Here four women kick through the czardas, a Hungarian dance, on a stage of dark green panels and orange-gold frames. He left parts of the canvas unpainted and came back to it years later to fill them with hot colour. It is over two metres wide and hangs in the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
