Music — Henri Matisse

A large Fauvist canvas print in red and green. Five vermilion figures stand and sit on a bare green hill under a flat blue sky, with no landscape and no detail anywhere else in it, so a living room, a dining room or a hotel lobby gets one long band of hot colour across a wall that was carrying nothing.

Visual Presence

Printed three metres wide, the green hill and the blue sky split the wall into two calm bands with the five red bodies strung across the join, so a living room warms up without a single other colour being added to the room. From the far side of the space only the red carries — five marks spaced along a wide field — which is what lets the print hold a long empty wall on its own instead of a row of smaller frames. Standing close, the violin, the small pipe and the open singing mouths separate out of the red, so the wall keeps giving something back as people cross the room.

About the Art

Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Expressionism, painted 1910. Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Fauvism, painted 1910. We chose it because it is one half of the most ambitious commission of his life: Sergei Shchukin, having ordered The Dance, wrote asking for a second panel on the subject of music, and the pair hung together on the staircase of his Moscow mansion. Matisse worked without preparatory sketches, so the surface still carries his changes. Paris saw it first at the Salon d'Automne in 1910, where the reception was poor. The Hermitage has held it since 1948, inventory ГЭ-9674. Oil on canvas, 260 by 389 centimetres — built at wall scale from the start.
