The Red Studio — Henri Matisse

A huge Modern Abstract canvas print in red. Its enveloping red warmth and gallery pedigree make it a natural anchor for a gallery wall, executive office, hotel lounge or a dining room where a single saturated statement is wanted.

Visual Presence

A single flat field of deep Venetian red floods the entire scene, dissolving floor, walls and furniture into one continuous plane. Across it float the artist's own works and objects — a reclining pink nude, small framed pictures, a grandfather clock, ceramics and a slender green-leaved plant — drawn in pale outline and set with cooler notes of pink, white, blue and green. The effect is warm, saturated and quietly commanding, an interior distilled to pure colour and floating form.

About the Art

Henri Matisse painted this view of his studio at Issy-les-Moulineaux, filling the canvas with a single flat expanse of Venetian red that overrides the ordinary logic of a room. Furniture and floor are indicated only by thin reserved lines, while the objects Matisse chose to render in full colour are his own paintings, sculptures and ceramics, arranged around the walls like an inventory of his art. The unifying red flattens perspective and binds every element into one radiant surface. The painting is held in The Museum of Modern Art, New York, which acquired it in 1949.
