Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Background — Henri Matisse

An oversized Fauvist canvas print in blue and brown. The blue-and-gold wallpaper runs out to all four edges with no horizon anywhere in it, so in a bedroom, a living room or a hotel suite the wall reads as hung cloth rather than flat plaster, with the seated figure and her potted plant the only still points in the pattern.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall, the slate-blue panels and yellow scrollwork spread one even, curtain-like colour across the whole wall, so a bedroom or a living room reads as fabric-lined instead of painted. From the far side of the room only three things carry — the blue field, the gold ribbon winding through it and the pale seated body on the right — so the print holds a wide wall on its own without a group of frames around it. Walk up to it and the red flowers, the yellow lemons and the blue-and-white pot separate out of the pattern, so the wall keeps changing as someone crosses the room.

About the Art

Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Expressionism, painted 1925. Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Fauvism, painted 1925. We chose it for the fight inside it: a nude built with sculptural light and shadow set against a background flattened until the eye cannot tell the woman from the cloth behind her. The Centre Pompidou records the setting as his Nice studio, fitted out in 1921 with movable fabric panels, rugs and screens; the ornamental background is a textile of roses inside arabesque medallions on a dark ground. Diagonal stripes in the mat and rug push depth back into a wall that otherwise stays completely flat — a balancing act the Pompidou calls an acrobatic feat. Oil on canvas, 130 by 98 centimetres, accession AM 2149 P.
