The Collegiate Church of St. Patrocli in Soest — Christian Rohlfs

A large Expressionist canvas print in red and blue. Its red roofs and pale streaks of sky sit low and bright while the navy spires run the full height of the picture, so a living room, a staircase wall or a hotel reception reads taller and warmer with it up than the bare plaster did on its own.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall, the slabs of vermilion roof across the bottom third bounce warm colour onto the floor and the furniture nearest the wall, so a living room reads hotter and closer with it up, despite how much navy sits in the picture. From the far side of the space only two things carry — the dark spire driving up the centre and the block of red roof at the right — which is why it holds a tall wall on its own instead of needing a group of frames around it. Walk up to it and the whole surface breaks into short vertical strokes and ridges of thick paint, so a lamp or a window raking across the wall keeps the print flickering through the day.

About the Art

Christian Rohlfs (1849–1938), Expressionism, painted 1912. Christian Rohlfs (1849–1938), German Expressionism, painted 1912. We chose it for the return. Rohlfs came to Soest in 1904 and worked there two summers; his biographer Paul Vogt records that the winding lanes and the four church towers gave him a subject of unexpected pull, and Rohlfs wrote that he had been enthusiastic about Soest all summer. He met Emil Nolde there in 1906, the start of a lifelong friendship. Years later he was still painting these towers — and St. Patrocli, whose green sandstone tower locals call the Tower of Westphalia, comes back here in red and navy.
