The Sun — Edvard Munch

A huge Expressionist canvas print in purple and blue. The pale spokes running out of the sun reach past the violet mountains to all four edges, and that outward pull pushes the wall back in a hotel lobby, a boardroom or a living room, so the room reads as though it opens onto water at sunrise.

Visual Presence

Hung at three metres the cream ground and the white core of the sun keep the whole wall bright, so a room that only gets light from one side stops looking dim. The rays carry past the violet ridges to every edge, which makes a long wall read wider rather than merely covered. Because the violets and pale blues are soft, it stays quiet under warm evening lamps instead of taking over the room.

About the Art

Edvard Munch (1863–1944), Expressionism, painted 1912. Edvard Munch (1863-1944), Expressionist, painted 1912. We chose it because it is the version that stayed with Munch, not the canvas installed in the University of Oslo's ceremonial hall. It reached the city of Oslo among the works still in his possession in 1944, and MUNCH catalogues it as MM.M.00964: oil on canvas, roughly 324 by 510 centimetres. That is over five metres of painting. The motif is the sun coming up over the water at Kragerø on the southern Norwegian coast. This version is paler and cooler than the installed one, its rays drawn as thin spokes across bare priming. It was made at wall scale.
