Champs de Mars, the Red Tower — Robert Delaunay

A huge Cubist canvas print in red and white. The red-orange tower climbs the full height of the canvas through white cloud shards while the grey apartment blocks up both edges hold the sides down, so a hallway, a reception area or a stairwell wall gets one strong vertical running floor to ceiling instead of a flat painted surface.

Visual Presence

Hung two and a half metres tall, the red of the tower throws warm colour down a passage that has no window of its own, and the white cloud shards behind it keep the wall bright rather than heavy. The grey and near-black buildings leaning in from both edges frame the print like a second doorway, which gives a tall narrow wall a reason to be tall. From the far end of the room it reads as one red climbing line; the small yellow suns and the green sky slivers at the top only separate when you are a step away.

About the Art

Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), Modern, painted 1911. Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), Cubist, painted 1911. We chose it because it is the Eiffel Tower series at its most vertical: the tower is broken apart and rebuilt taller than it stands, wedged between Paris apartment blocks that lean in from both edges. The Art Institute of Chicago dates the canvas 1911/23; he kept returning to it after its first showings, at Barbazanges in Paris and at Der Sturm in Berlin. Oil on canvas, 160.7 by 128.6 centimetres. The Brazilian modernist Tarsila do Amaral bought it in Paris and took it to Sao Paulo; Chicago acquired it in 1959, Joseph Winterbotham Collection, 1959.1.
