Accordion Player — Josef Capek

A large Cubist canvas print in grey and blue. The player is cut from the same brushed grey as the wall behind him, so only the cornflower-blue accordion and the two vermilion panels beside it come forward, which gives an entryway, a hallway or an office reception one bright rectangle of colour on a wall that otherwise stays completely quiet.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall the player stands at roughly your own height, so an entryway or a hallway reads as occupied rather than decorated the moment you turn into it. Grey is the whole ground of the picture and it sits close to plaster, so the canvas throws almost no colour back into the space and the walls, timber and flooring stay the exact tone they already were. From the far end of a corridor only two things carry, the blue accordion at the centre and the red panels flanking it, which is why this print holds a wide plain wall on its own with nothing hung beside it.

About the Art

Josef Capek (1887–1945), Modern, painted 1913. Josef Capek (1887–1945), Czech Cubism, painted 1913. We chose it because this is Cubism argued, not copied. At the end of 1912 Capek walked out of the Group of Fine Artists after falling out with Emil Filla and Vincenc Kramář, who held that Czech painting should follow Picasso strictly. He took the editor's chair at Volné směry instead and made the case for the art of children and of untrained carvers as the real thing. A year later he cut this street musician the way a village carver would: one solid post of a body, a masked face, a squeezebox jammed across it. National Gallery Prague, accession O 3776.
