Gelée blanche au village de Crozant — Armand Guillaumin

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in pink and blue. Its radiant, atmospheric light lends warmth and calm to a dining room, wellness space or reception, drawing the eye into a luminous winter distance.

Visual Presence

A frost-bound valley falls away toward a distant village nestled at the horizon, its rooftops catching the last apricot glow of a low winter sun. A streaked sky of pale peach, mint and lilac presses over hills furred in rose, violet and icy blue, while bare trees stand slender against the light on the right. The whole scene shimmers in broken, high-keyed strokes of pink, powder blue and frost-white.

About the Art

Armand Guillaumin painted this white-frost view of Crozant in the Creuse valley, the region he made his own after a lottery win allowed him to paint without constraint and where he led the Crozant School of landscape artists. His "gelées blanches" — a celebrated series of frost mornings — were shown in force at Durand-Ruel's Paris gallery to great acclaim, and in them he drove Impressionist colour to an unusually vivid, expressive pitch. Here the cold blues of the shadowed land are set alight by warm pinks and peaches, capturing the fugitive glow of a frozen dawn.
