The Merry Jesters — Henri Rousseau

A large Jungle canvas print in green and olive. Its deep green density and quiet drama suit a study, library or executive lounge, drawing the eye into a room without unsettling its calm.

Visual Presence

Dense walls of foliage climb the canvas in layered greens — deep bottle-green fronds and palms shot through with ochre-tinged leaves and a slim opening of pale blue sky above. A cluster of dark bearded monkeys huddles low among the grasses, one grasping a slender pale stick, while a soft grey-white bird perches to the right. The palette is lush and shadowed, green massed against earthy brown with cool sky and white as quiet accents.

About the Art

Henri Rousseau painted The Merry Jesters as one of his imagined jungle scenes, assembled entirely from the hothouses of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, illustrated books and taxidermy displays rather than any tropical journey — he never left France. A group of bearded monkeys and a tropical bird stare out at the viewer as though startled from their play, an upturned bottle spilling into the air before them and a lone monkey clutching a tree behind. Once owned by Pablo Picasso, who prized Rousseau's untutored vision, the painting is held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
