J.M.W. Turner's Margate, from the Sea — pure weather and light on a large statement canvas, a radical late seascape.

Visual Presence

A turbulent English estuary seen from low on the water, with the town of Margate dissolved into a thin pale strip on the horizon and a high stormy sky building in yellow, grey and rose above churning blue-green sea. Sailing vessels are half-obscured in mist; weather is the subject.

About the Art

J.M.W. Turner painted Margate from the Sea between 1835 and 1840 during one of his many sketching campaigns to the Kentish coast, which he treated as a personal laboratory for sea-and-sky studies. By this stage his canvases had moved decisively away from topographical specificity toward pure weather and light, and Margate — where he had stayed since childhood — provided the atmospheric raw material for the most radical of his late seascapes. The painting is widely cited as one of the clearest precursors to Impressionist and proto-abstract treatment of weather as subject.
