Wheatfield with Crows — Vincent van Gogh

A wide Impressionist canvas print in blue and yellow. Its sweeping panoramic breadth and dramatic contrast suit a long feature wall in a gallery, hotel lobby or executive boardroom, commanding a broad expanse with presence.

Visual Presence

A ripe golden wheatfield stretches wide beneath a heavy, storm-dark blue sky, three earthen paths cutting into and through the grain. A scatter of black crows lifts in loose flight across the upper field. The palette is charged and elemental — hot yellow and ochre wheat set against deep, thunderous blue, with green path-verges and red-brown soil, the whole surface driven by turbulent, slashing strokes.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted Wheatfield with Crows in July 1890, in the last weeks of his life at Auvers-sur-Oise. He adopted an unusually wide, panoramic format for a group of canvases made under what he called turbulent skies, works he said expressed sadness and extreme loneliness yet also the health and restorative force he found in the countryside. The three diverging paths, the massed blue sky and the rising crows give the scene its dramatic charge. Long read as a final statement, it remains among his most powerful late landscapes. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
