Visual Presence

Two pale-trunked trees rise across the foreground, their thinning canopies scattered with flecks of yellow, gold and rust against a clear pale-blue sky. Behind them, tan and buff hills roll toward a long pink adobe wall, while a band of golden field grass stitched with green threads runs along the base. The palette is warm and luminous — sunlit ochres, soft pinks and clear blue held in crisp autumn light.

About the Art

Victor Higgins painted this country landscape around 1920, during the period when he was a leading member of the Taos Society of Artists in New Mexico. The work is a representational study of bare autumn trees set against the brilliant high-desert sky, its thinning leaves dabbed in gold and rust across the pale trunks. It belongs to Higgins's earlier, more grounded manner, before his landscapes moved toward the broad, abstracted colour masses of his later years. The scene captures the crisp clarity of a New Mexico November — warm earthen hills, low adobe forms and the region's famously luminous light.
