The Sower — Vincent van Gogh

A large Impressionist canvas print in gold and purple. Its radiant colour and symbolic charge command a large wall in a boardroom, hotel lobby or gallery space, anchoring the room with warmth and presence.

Visual Presence

A vast lemon-yellow sun hangs low over a violet ploughed field, its light flooding the whole sky in warm gold. A dark, gnarled tree slants boldly across the scene while a solitary sower strides forward, scattering seed into the furrows. The colour is daring and near-symbolic — radiant yellow against deep purple, blue and rust, worked in strong directional strokes.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this sower under a great setting sun at Arles, drawing on Jean-François Millet, whose peasant subjects he revered, while pushing far beyond him into bold, expressive colour. He set a violet field against a yellow sky quite deliberately, treating the pairing of complementary colours as a way to carry feeling rather than record fact. The lone figure sowing seed carried for him a note of hope and renewal. He struggled with the composition and returned to the motif more than once. The painting is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo.
