Banks of the Seine with Pont de Clichy in the Spring — Vincent van Gogh

An extra large Impressionist canvas print in green and white. Its gentle, luminous palette suits a bedroom, wellness space or quiet dining room, bringing softness and light to the room.

Visual Presence

Slender trees arch over a quiet stretch of pale, silvery water, their branches breaking into flecks of fresh yellow-green leaf. The near bank is a shimmering carpet of grass and wildflowers, dabbed in short strokes of white, pink, blue and pale green. The palette is light and springlike — green and yellow lifted by soft pastel touches over a hushed, luminous river.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this riverbank on the outskirts of Paris, near Asnières and the Pont de Clichy, during the two years he spent living with his brother Theo in the city. Working alongside artists such as Paul Signac, he absorbed the broken colour and small, separated brushstrokes of the Neo-Impressionists, lightening his palette dramatically after the dark tones of his earlier Dutch years. Here he uses flickering dabs of pure colour to catch the fresh, dappled light of spring along the Seine. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
