Two Poplars in the Alpilles near Saint-Rémy — Vincent van Gogh

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in blue and yellow. The two flame-gold poplars climb the full height of the wall while the swirling cobalt sky keeps a hallway, stairwell or hotel lobby in slow, living motion.

Visual Presence

At mural scale the poplars run nearly floor to ceiling, giving a tall wall the upward pull of real trees. The swirling cobalt sky keeps the whole surface in motion, so a corridor or stair wall reads alive rather than flat as you move past it. The pale celadon hills throw daylight back into the room while the gold crowns burn warm against all that blue.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this pair of poplars during his year in the psychiatric hospital at Saint-Rémy, convinced that painting itself would help cure him. Once permitted to work outdoors again he produced some 150 canvases there, and Cleveland's curators single this autumn landscape out as the full power of his mature style: trees twisting against a darkening sky, built from thick, charged brushstrokes and dollops of near-sculptural paint. The canvas came to the Cleveland Museum of Art through the Leonard C. Hanna Jr. bequest. We chose it because those two vertical flames were made for a tall wall — oversized, they return the force the small canvas holds.
