Wheatfield with a Reaper — Vincent van Gogh

A big Impressionist canvas print in gold and green. Its radiant golden field and symbolic depth command a large wall in a boardroom, hotel lobby or gallery space, filling the room with warmth and presence.

Visual Presence

A vast field of ripe wheat fills the canvas in surging waves of gold and yellow, worked in swirling, rhythmic strokes. A small reaper bends to his work at the left, while blue-mauve mountains rise behind a low wall and a pale-yellow sun hangs in a soft green sky. The palette is warm and near-monochrome — gold and yellow against blue hills and a luminous green heaven.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this reaper in the enclosed wheatfield he could see from his room at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He described the solitary figure labouring under a blazing sun as an image of humanity being harvested — the reaper as a kind of death — yet he insisted the picture held no sadness, calling it almost smiling, gold under a light of pure gold. He returned to the motif several times, seeking that note of serenity. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
