Job — Alphonse Mucha

Visual Presence

A woman with long black hair reclines within a ring, her head tilted back as she draws on a cigarette, one hand resting on a packet of Job papers across her lap. She wears a warm orange wrap that pools into golden drapery, set against a decorative yellow ground patterned with the interlaced JOB monogram. The palette glows in gold and amber, with black hair and a single red bloom giving the composition its accents.

About the Art

Alphonse Mucha created this design as an advertisement for the Job company, makers of cigarette rolling papers. Framed within a circle beneath the ornamental word Job, the dark-haired woman holds a lighted cigarette and a packet of the papers, her tumbling hair dissolving into the sinuous arabesques that surround her. It followed Mucha's earlier Job poster and remains among his most recognised commercial designs, so admired that copies were bought purely to be displayed as decoration. The work distils the graphic Art Nouveau style he made fashionable in turn-of-the-century Paris, uniting figure, hair and ornament into one flowing whole.
