Poppy Field — Gustav Klimt

A large Impressionist canvas print in green and red. Its saturated, joyful field of colour enlivens a dining room, hotel lobby or wellness space, bringing a full wall to life without a hard focal point.

Visual Presence

A luminous summer meadow fills the whole square, a shimmering green weave stitched with scarlet poppies, cornflower blue, gold and white daisies scattered like confetti. Two slender fruit trees rise at the edges while a dark bank of foliage and a few tall trees close the horizon under a pale sky. The colour is dense and mosaic-like, every stroke a bloom, radiant and softly airless.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt painted Poppy Field during a summer stay at Litzlberg on the Attersee, where he came upon a meadow ablaze with wild flowers. Rather than describe deep space, he tilts the field upright and packs it edge to edge with dabbed blossoms, a technique often likened to French pointillism, so the surface reads as a single vibrating tapestry. The scattered poppies, cornflowers and daisies dissolve any single focal point, turning landscape into pure pattern and colour. The work is held in the Belvedere, Vienna.
