Lakeshore with Birches — Gustav Klimt

A large Impressionist canvas print in green and white. Its restful greens and quiet water suit a bedroom, library or wellness retreat, bringing a wall the calm of a still lakeside.

Visual Presence

Two slim white-barked birches rise at the right against a deep, shadowed wood, their trunks flecked with dark marks. To the left a still pond lies pale and silvery, mirroring the dark bank above, while the grassy shore is dotted with yellow dandelions and violet spikes. The palette is quiet and cool, mossy greens and browns steadied by the bright verticals of bark and the soft glow of reflected water.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt painted Lakeshore with Birches during his early summers on the Attersee, where slender birches and quiet water became recurring motifs. He sets the trees hard against a dark, close-toned wood and balances them with the pale mirror of the pond, flattening depth into a hushed, tapestry-like surface touched with wild flowers. Long held privately, the work descended through the family of the collectors Richard and Klara Koenigs-Bunge, who acquired it in 1902, and was unknown to scholars until its rediscovery a little over a decade ago.
