On Lake Attersee — Gustav Klimt

A large square Impressionist canvas print in aqua and grey. Its serene, near-abstract expanse of water suits a wellness space, boardroom or executive office, lending a wall stillness and cool composure.

Visual Presence

Almost the entire square is given to still, shimmering water, a soft grey-blue surface flecked all over with short dashes of turquoise and aqua that catch the light. Only the upper band opens to a pale, hazy sky, with a small dark headland pushing in at the top right. The mood is cool, luminous and deeply calm, the lake stretching quietly to a barely visible far shore.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt painted On Lake Attersee during his first summer on the lake, taking the radical step of filling nearly the whole square with water. Only the top right corner admits the shore of Litzlberg Island, so the picture becomes an almost abstract field of rippling surface built from countless small strokes. First seen at the tenth Secession exhibition in Vienna, it drew admiration for its daring composition. The painting is held in the Leopold Museum, Vienna, with a documented ownership history reaching back to the Austrian state collection.
