Birch Forest — Gustav Klimt

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in orange and green. Its warm, immersive verticals suit a study, library or executive office, wrapping a wall in the quiet of a forest floor.

Visual Presence

Pale birch trunks rise in a close vertical rhythm across the square, their white bark flecked with dark eyes and knots. Beneath them a deep carpet of fallen leaves glows in orange, rust and gold, broken by patches of mossy green and, low at the right, a single spray of blue flowers. The palette is warm and enveloping, the eye held by the forest floor rather than any sky.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt painted Birch Forest during one of his summers on Lake Attersee, where he rose early to walk in the woods before turning to landscape. He crops the scene tightly, banishing the sky and pressing the slender trunks flat against a dense autumn floor so the whole square becomes a shimmering screen of leaf and bark. The mosaic of fallen leaves, built from countless small touches, verges on the abstract while remaining unmistakably a wood. The painting has passed through notable private hands, including the Paul G. Allen Family Collection.
