Cycles Perfecta — Alphonse Mucha

A large Art Nouveau canvas print in red and orange. Its confident scale and warm, graphic energy make it a natural focal point for a boutique hotel lobby, a creative studio or a spirited dining room. The strong vertical draws the eye upward, animating a tall wall or stairwell.

Visual Presence

A young woman with a great cascade of auburn and russet hair leans over the handlebars of a bicycle, her gaze meeting the viewer beneath the bold red letters spelling CYCLES PERFECTA. Sinuous linework and white drapery play against a muted grey-green ground, while warm oranges and reds sweep through her hair and dress. The palette is fiery and earthen — reds, browns and warm skin tones held within Mucha's flowing Art Nouveau contours.

About the Art

Alphonse Mucha designed this advertising poster for the British firm Cycles Perfecta, which hoped to expand its trade across the Channel. The image distils the sense of freedom and exhilaration then associated with cycling: the rider's loosened hair streams outward as she grips the handlebars, her expression open and confident. It was produced as a colour lithograph and printed by the Parisian house of F. Champenois, who realised many of Mucha's celebrated posters, and distributed widely around the French capital. The composition typifies Mucha's mature Art Nouveau manner, in which flowing hair, decorative line and the modern woman become a single ornamental whole.
