The Virgin — Gustav Klimt

An extra large Symbolist canvas print in blue and purple. Its opulent colour and swirling ornament make a commanding centrepiece for a gallery wall, boutique hotel suite or refined reception space.

Visual Presence

A tangle of sleeping women floats against a dark ground, their pale faces and limbs surfacing from a great swirling mass of patterned cloth. Deep violet and blue dominate, spiralled with purple coils and studded with jewel-bright discs of orange, pink, green and gold flowers. The whole cluster forms one drifting oval, sensuous and dreamlike, alive with restless ornament yet held in hushed sleep.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt made The Virgin among the last works completed before his death, a hovering cluster of seven interlaced women wrapped in a single decorated blanket. The central figure lies in blue while the others, understood to embody stages of womanhood from girlhood to awakening, curl around her in a rhythm of coiling ornament and flowers. The composition abandons any setting, letting the patterned mass float free against darkness. It was purchased directly from a Prague exhibition of the Deutschböhmischer Künstlerbund in 1914 and is held in the National Gallery, Prague.
