Bauerngarten (Cottage Garden) — Gustav Klimt

A big Impressionist canvas print in green and orange. Its lush, saturated colour brings warmth and vitality to a dining room, spa or hotel lounge, filling a wall with the abundance of high summer.

Visual Presence

A cottage garden crowds the square from edge to edge, a green thicket packed with blossom. A drift of glowing orange marigolds sweeps across the lower right, answered by white daisies, tall pale roses, and clusters of red, magenta and violet flowers scattered through the foliage. The colour is riotous yet finely balanced, the whole surface a dense, upright tapestry of bloom with no sky in sight.

About the Art

Gustav Klimt painted Bauerngarten during his summers on the Attersee, drawn to the exuberant country gardens of the lakeside villages. He tilts the bed upright and fills the entire canvas with flowers, dissolving depth into an all-over field of colour that shifts from cool blues and whites into a blaze of orange and red. First shown at the 1908 Kunstschau in Vienna, the painting later entered the National Gallery in Prague before passing into private hands. It remains among the most celebrated of his flowering garden pictures.
