The Beacon — Odilon Redon

An oversized Symbolist canvas print in blue and gold. Two metres of deep ultramarine darken and quiet the wall, while the lantern's small lit face and its arc of yellow light hold the eye across a dining room, a hotel bar or a reading room the way a single candle left burning does.

Visual Presence

At full size the blue field reads as night itself, deepening the wall and lowering the whole room toward dusk. The one lit face and its yellow halo behave like a real lamp on the wall — every seat turns toward it, and dim evening lighting makes it stronger, not weaker. It suits a dark-painted or timber wall where paler prints wash out, and it carries that wall alone.

About the Art

Odilon Redon made this image twice. It began in charcoal, in the dark years he called his noirs; a decade on he returned to the sheet with pastel, and the paper itself has altered to a golden tone beneath the colour. The subject is pure Redon: a lantern on a heavy chain, and inside it not a flame but a sleeping human face, haloed like an icon. Long in Chicago's Winterbotham family collection, it now belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago and has been exhibited from Paris onward. We chose it because no other image in the catalogue lights a dark wall from so small a point.
