Odilon Redon's Ophelia with a Blue Wimple — the Symbolist master's c.1900 vision of Shakespeare's Ophelia dissolving into pure reverie, on gallery canvas.

Visual Presence

A reclining figure with flowing orange-tinted hair lies on a deep blue cape that floats on the water's surface. Soft dreamlike clouds of pink, peach, green and lilac swirl around the figure, with small red poppies anchoring the lower right. The image dissolves between figuration and abstraction, suspended in pastel atmosphere.

About the Art

Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a leading French Symbolist whose work shifted from monochrome charcoal 'Noirs' to luminous pastel and oil compositions in the 1890s and after. Ophelia with a Blue Wimple, painted around 1900, treats Shakespeare's drowned Ophelia not as a tragic narrative figure but as a vision dissolving into reverie — a recurring Symbolist theme. Redon influenced both the Nabis and later Surrealists; his late colour work bridges 19th-century Symbolism and 20th-century abstraction.
