Abstract Composition with Crossing Lines — Wassily Kandinsky

Visual Presence

On a bright cream ground, long black and coloured bars slice diagonally across a soft ochre cloud at the centre, where a bold red hooked form rises like a cane. Around it cluster checkerboard patches, striped flags, a bullseye of red and blue, small triangles and a half-moon eye motif in crimson, yellow, violet and pink. The composition is scattered and buoyant — precise drawn lines animating clean washes over open white space.

About the Art

Crossing and intersecting lines were central to Kandinsky's abstract method at the Bauhaus, where he examined the line as an active force generated by tension and direction, a subject he set out systematically in Point and Line to Plane (1926). Works such as his 1923 studies of transverse and intersecting lines show him orchestrating diagonals and straight elements into dynamic structure. Here the crossing lines act as Kandinsky theorised them — vectors of movement that organise the surface and set its rhythm.
