Painting with Red Spot — Wassily Kandinsky

An oversized Colourful Abstract canvas print in red and blue. Its exuberant colour and scale make a commanding centrepiece for a gallery wall, hotel lobby, creative office or grand living space, energising a large room with painterly vitality.

Visual Presence

Colour erupts across the square canvas in a swirl of primaries and pastels — a vast luminous red-orange oval floats at the upper left, balanced by a dense, explosive cluster of dark blues, blacks and jewel tones at the upper right. Between them, ribbons of blue, rose, yellow and green surge upward, threaded by black lines and stray strokes. The whole surface pulses with lyrical, near-musical energy, half-dissolving into radiant, weightless abstraction.

About the Art

Wassily Kandinsky painted Painting with Red Spot in the intense years before the First World War, at the height of the lyrical abstraction he had pioneered in Munich. Working to free colour and line from the depiction of objects, he sought what he called an inner necessity — an art that moved the viewer as music does, through the direct resonance of hue and form. The luminous red oval and the dark, teeming cluster set up a charged dialogue across the surface, while veiled traces of landscape and figures dissolve into pure colour. The painting is held in the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
