Composition with Blue Semicircle — Wassily Kandinsky

A big Modern Abstract canvas print in blue and red. Its cool, balanced palette and architectural calm suit a boardroom, an executive office, a design studio or a contemporary living space where an assured focal point is wanted.

Visual Presence

A broad blue semicircle dominates a soft pink and cream ground, its curve overlaid with slim horizontal bars of black, red and orange and a couple of needle-tipped darts. To its right a slab of deep indigo carries stacked stripes of green, red and yellow, while a small blue disc and a pale bowl float in an inset panel above a layered black, teal, red and gold rectangle. Bordered by mauve and dusk-blue margins, the mood is cool, poised and quietly modern.

About the Art

The blue semicircle reflects Kandinsky's Bauhaus-era study of the circle and its segments as primary abstract forms, which he analysed at length in his teaching and in Point and Line to Plane (1926). He associated blue with depth and inward movement, and geometric segments such as the semicircle recur throughout his compositions of the 1920s, including works built from circles, triangles and arcs. The form is handled as an independent element balanced against the surrounding field rather than as a depiction of anything observed.
