Black Form with Rainbow Band — Wassily Kandinsky

An XL Abstract canvas print in black and white. Its soft pastel ground and bright accents make an elegant statement wall for a light-filled lounge, boutique hotel, creative office or refined dining room, adding colour with composure.

Visual Presence

A ground of soft pastel rectangles — powder blue, cream, sand and rose — is laid like pale brickwork across the canvas. Over it a large irregular black form spreads at the left, holding a glowing blue disc and small green wedges, while a black-ringed circle split green and white floats at the upper right. A bright diagonal band of rainbow stripes cuts across, and a slender blue crescent, arrows and a poised sphere complete the scene in clear, buoyant colour.

About the Art

This composition draws on the geometric vocabulary Kandinsky developed during his Bauhaus years (1922-1933), when he taught form theory and set out the grammar of point, line and plane in his 1926 treatise. In that period he treated the circle, the arc and the taut colour band as autonomous pictorial forces, balancing a dominant dark form against ribbons of spectral colour. The interplay of a solid black shape and a running band of hues reflects his conviction that colour and form each carry their own inner resonance and can be composed like music.
