Good Afternoon, Mrs. Lincoln — Arshile Gorky

An oversized abstract canvas print in cream white and yellow. Its bone-pale ground keeps a living room, reception or executive office feeling light, while the wiry black line and scattered yellow and green washes give the wall the energy of a drawing still being made.

Visual Presence

On the wall it reads as a field of warm parchment light, close in tone to plaster or linen, so it brightens a room rather than weighing on it. From across the space the restless black line-work registers first and gives the wall movement without any dark mass; the yellow, green and sky-blue washes only surface as you come closer. It suits a big daylight wall where the colour stays quiet and the drawing does the talking.

About the Art

Arshile Gorky is the bridge over which European Surrealism crossed into American Abstract Expressionism: the Armenian-born painter whom André Breton claimed for his own movement and the young New York School looked to first. This canvas comes from the celebrated run of paintings made after his summers drawing in the fields of Crooked Run Farm in Virginia, where remembered orchards, grasses and insects loosened into drifting line and thin, washed colour. We chose it because the oil behaves like a watercolour at wall scale: signed A. Gorky at lower left, its preparatory study recorded in the artist's catalogue raisonné, the canvas itself later sold at Christie's in New York.
