About this artwork

Painted during Mägi's Norwegian period, when the Estonian master was at his most colour-saturated. The forest floor erupts in pointillist dots of orange, magenta and ochre; slender birches rise like ribbons of light; the dark water at the centre sits perfectly still. Mägi worked thickly, in jewel tones, with a hand somewhere between Munch and the Fauves but unmistakably his own. He is the painter the rest of Europe is still discovering — Estonia's most important early modernist, finally getting the recognition that eluded him in life.
