Women on the Shore (Holland) — Wassily Kandinsky

An extra large Colourful Abstract canvas print in brown and olive. Its warm, grounded palette and quiet storytelling suit a library, a dining room, a study or a hotel lounge where a rich, characterful scene is wanted.

Visual Presence

Against a deep, warm brown ground, a group of figures in traditional Dutch dress gathers at the water's edge — a moustached man in a dark coat beside women in winged lace caps, their skirts patterned in green and dotted white. Behind them a low coastline runs to a pale lighthouse, red-roofed cottages and a thicket of masts, with a single sail out on the water. The palette is earthy and glowing, brown and olive lit by gold, red and green.

About the Art

This shoreline subject belongs to Kandinsky's early representational work, before his turn to abstraction, and to the kind of Dutch coastal scene tied to the month he travelled through the Netherlands with Gabriele Münter in 1904, working through towns from Rotterdam and Amsterdam to the northern fishing villages. In the tempera and gouache works of that moment he set richly costumed figures against dark grounds, drawing on folk dress and harbour life in a decorative, tapestry-like way. Rendered here in glowing browns, olive and gold, it reflects that documented Holland group; specific details of this individual work are not independently verified.
